The History

It was the dream of John, Nick and Paul to design, develop and produce a full body conversion kit for the much loved Toyota MK1 MR2, and 18 months ago, Karmeleon Ltd. was formed with local business man Paul Filer.

Considerable time and effort was put in researching the current market, and ensuring the right design and build team were put together. Richard Fielding, with 10 years previous experience at Marcos, joined the company as Workshop Manager to control build quality and provide valuable design input.

Sebastian King, a young up and coming Formula Three racing driver, was asked to join the company as Marketing Manager, and to provide input on cockpit ergonomics and handling characteristics.

With two cars already completed and a third car in production, Karmeleon is growing fast, and are already looking towards exporting kits.

Realising the Dream

18 months ago Paul Filer bought a MK1 MR2 for his son as a present and proceeded to search the web for a kit. After many late nights staring at a computer screen, and very little success, Paul decided that the only thing left was to produce a kit of his own.

He sought advise from John, a local business man who dealt with Japanese sports cars who immediately liked the idea. They both set about researching the current market extensively, searching web sites, e-mailing clubs and even phoning Toyota direct in Japan. It was clear that there was a market for a kit for a MK1 MR2, but John had ideas that stretched further than just a kit.

John wanted to design a full body conversion to bring the 80’s styled MK1 into the millennium. It had to be durable, made out of the highest quality glass fibre, easy to fit but above all a head turner and a car that would give anyone who looked at it a rush of adrenalin.

John, Paul and their friend Nick set about sketching ideas. They wanted something new that would interest both the young and the slightly older generations. Once they had a basic design that they all liked they purchased a donor car and set about covering it expanding foam, which they then shaped into the proposed design.

Next on the scene was Richard Fielding. Having worked for Marcos for 10 years he had gained extensive experience in glass fibre moulds, and his job was to ensure that their design could be produced. He was quick to point out that there were a few lines on the proposed car that although possible in steel, would not be possible in glass fibre. Back to the drawing board!

The design of the car, dictated by the need for flowing lines and yet within the mould tool boundaries, took a total of 18 months to go from dream to reality and the first car rolled of the production line earlier this year.

With a choice of front nose cone in the not to distant future, and Seb King the young up and coming Formula Three driver on board as head of marketing and chassis development, Karmeleon Cars Ltd is growing fast and will be the car to be seen in for 2003 and beyond.

Development

01, Forming the shape of the front wings.

02, Shaping the door mould.

03, Shaping the rear.

04, The rear was, believe it or not really taking shape.

05, 1st effort in shaping the front bumper.

06, Not a mess! We were trying to get the indicator to fit and look like it belonged.

07, First attempt at finding lights. It also shows the boot extension, spoiler, and half the back.

08, We were 90% there with the look.

09, The first primer coat was on. We were getting close.

10, The shape was agreed, lights agreed, wheels agreed!

11, The car was sprayed, it looked so good and we were about to remove the kit to make the moulds.

12. As above but the rear.
